The visit
Where the ice has settled decides the first half hour. A sheet across the rear panel sends us behind it with a meter, onto the defrost heater, the bimetal and the sensor, with a cycle forced on purpose so we can see which of the three never energises. A slab under the basket instead means the meltwater never left, so the trough and the drain get the attention. Frost on the walls and the food is a door question, and the seal is tested on paper at six points round the frame.
You hear which of those it was, and why it happened, before there is a figure — and the figure is one number for the part and the work together. Where a drain has iced more than once we say what caused it, because clearing ice without fixing the cause only books the same call again.
