The $89 Visit: Finding Why There Is No Ice

Service call, including the diagnosis $89

$89 gets a technician to the unit and pays for finding the fault; agree to the repair and that $89 is taken back off its price.

When the complaint is no ice at all, what we usually find is water stopping short of the ice maker, at a shutoff, a filter, the inlet valve or a frozen fill tube, and less often a module that has failed. Sub-Zero Repair Bothell spends the $89 visit finding which one, in the order the water travels, before a price is given. Call (206) 202-2799.

BlamedFound
The whole ice maker, priced over the phoneA part-closed shutoff or a filter not locked in, which needs no part at all once found.
The inlet valve, because it is the usual suspectA fill tube frozen shut by low pressure, so the valve was never the problem.

What the visit checks, in order

The shutoff and the line behind the unit come first: is the valve fully open, is the tubing kinked where the unit was pushed home, is anything weeping. Then the filter, which has to be turned fully into its housing for water to pass. Then the inlet valve, powered and watched to see whether it opens and whether it closes again cleanly. Then the fill tube and the fill cup, and last of all the ice maker in the freezer.

What you have at the end of it

A named fault, where on the path it sits, and one parts-and-labour figure from the band that work belongs to. If the fix is on the house side, such as a shutoff a plumber should replace, you are told that too, and the $89 is the whole bill.

What moves it up, what moves it down

No figures here on purpose: the diagnosis settles the number, and you agree it first.
Pushes it upKeeps it down
The fault is the ice maker module itself rather than the water feeding it The stop is on the house side, a shutoff or a filter, and needs no part
The unit has to come out of its opening to reach the line or the valve The fault is a valve or a length of line rather than the module
The fill tube needs a full freezer defrost before the real fault shows You go ahead on the same visit, so the $89 comes off the repair

  • Nineteen years old, and half the street told me to junk it. He measured everything, said the sealed system was sound, and changed a defrost heater and a gasket instead.

  • Called about a dead ice maker and got useful advice on the wine side too. The fault was the module control. Replaced, and tested through two harvest cycles before he left.

  • Fresh food side had crept up near 50F while the freezer stayed solid. He logged both compartments, forced the defrost, then showed me the evaporator fan drawing almost nothing. New motor from the van and it held.
