Here is each piece the water passes, from the pipe in the wall to the ice in the bin: what it does, how its failure looks, and what we usually find in its place. From the house
What reaches the back of the unit: the line, the pressure, the filter.
- Supply line and shutoff The tubing and the valve between the house pipe and the unit.
- House water pressure How hard the water arrives, and why small or hollow cubes follow.
- Water filter and bypass The cartridge behind the grille, and running without one.
Into the ice maker
The valve that lets water in, and everything it fills.
- Water inlet valve The electric valve that opens for each fill and must shut tight.
- Fill tube and fill cup The short passage into the freezer, and why it ices shut.
- Ice maker module The mold and its controls, where each fill becomes a batch of cubes.
- Harvest motor and ejector The drive that lifts cubes out of the mold.
- Ice-level arm The arm that tells the ice maker the bin is full.
- Ice container and auger The container on dispenser models, and the screw that feeds the chute.
To the dispenser
Models with water or ice at the door or inside the cabinet.
- Chilled-water reservoir The tank that chills drinking water before it pours.
- Dispenser valve and tubing The switch, the valve and the line to the dispenser.

A separate appliance with its own water, spray and drain.
- Ice machine evaporator The refrigerated surface inside an ice machine where each batch freezes.
- Ice machine water spray The spray behind the curtain, and what a change in it says about the water.
- Drain pump and drain line Where melt and rinse water leave an ice machine.
